Insights > GB Standards – China
The Chinese market represents one of the fastest-growing and strategically important areas for fashion brands globally. With over one billion consumers, a growing middle class, and strong demand for quality products, China has become a key target for international manufacturers.
In addition to its market potential, China is also a leader in regulating imported products sold within its territory through compliance standards known as GB Standards (Guobiao). These standards, issued by the Standardization Administration of China (SAC), are mandatory for any product introduced to the Chinese market and cover a broad spectrum of sectors, including materials, safety, and performance.
Chinese GB Standards cover a wide range of products, including but not limited to:
- GB 18401 for textile materials;
- GB 20400 for leather goods;
- GB 31701 for textile products intended for children;
- GB 25036 for children’s footwear;
- GB 25038 for rubber shoes;
- GB 30585 for children’s shoes;
- GB 28011 for footwear shanks;
- GB 28480 for costume jewelry and metallic accessories;
- GB 21550 for PVC products;
- GB 5296.4 for labeling systems.
Chinese authorities perform meticulous inspections on products at two critical points: at the time of importation, through customs controls at entry points, and subsequently at retail locations, to ensure compliance with these standards. Companies are evaluated based on product conformity, and these evaluations influence how frequently they are subject to future inspections.
Consequences for non-compliance with GB Standards can be significant, including blockage of goods at customs clearance, removal of products from retail outlets, and, in severe cases, destruction of non-compliant products. Additionally, heavy administrative penalties may be imposed on violators.
