Global Organic Textile Standard GOTS

Insights > GOTS

The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certification is a fundamental benchmark in the world of ecological and socially responsible textile production. Unlike the BlueSign certification, which follows similar guidelines but does not incorporate the organic agriculture model, GOTS emphasizes comprehensive ethics and sustainability.

Companies that voluntarily choose to adhere to GOTS must meet strict environmental and social standards, including those of organic farming. This involves a constant commitment to responsibly managing every aspect of the production process, from the cultivation of raw materials to the commercialization of the finished product. GOTS provides compa-nies with a list of less harmful chemicals, excluding over 1000 toxic substances commonly used in the textile industry.

GOTS primarily certifies natural fabrics such as cotton, wool, linen, and silk, provided they meet organic farming re-quirements. A fabric can be GOTS certified if it contains at least 95% organic fibers, with flexibility up to 5% to in-clude other natural or artificial fibers, provided they meet specific sustainability criteria.

Additionally, GOTS mandates the use of sustainable packaging for certified products, including aspects such as labels, buttons, and zippers. This attention to detail significantly contributes to reducing environmental pollution caused by the textile industry.
