For companies aiming to market electronic equipment within the European Union, it is crucial to submit their products to RoHS compliance testing.
RoHS stands for “Restriction of Hazardous Substances”. It is a European Union directive that limits the use of specific hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment. This directive came into force in 2006 and has been updated over the years.
Equipment that must comply with RoHS requirements includes electronic products such as household devices, measuring instruments, medical equipment, and electronic toys. This often necessitates changes in production processes and the use of alternative materials.
It is essential for every new product to be closely monitored for the presence and concentration of certain restricted substances. These include lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), hexavalent chromium (Cr), polybrominated biphenyls (PBB), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE). The concentration of these substances in any product must not exceed the limits set by the RoHS directive, which are 0.1% (1,000 ppm) for most substances and 0.01% (100 ppm) specifically for cadmium, calculated by weight of the homogeneous material.
Why Undergo RoHS Compliance Testing?
Achieving compliance with the RoHS directive is essential for selling electronic products in the European Union and the European Economic Area (EEA):
- Legal Requirement: The RoHS CE mark is a legal requirement. Selling products in the EU without this mark is illegal.
- Consumer and Regulator Assurance: The RoHS CE mark assures consumers and regulatory bodies that the product is safe. Testing helps identify and resolve issues, preventing costly fines and market withdrawals.
