Microplastic

Insights > Microplastic

Microplastic pollution in the oceans is becoming an increasingly pressing issue, driving consumer behavior towards solutions that protect health and ecosystems.

Microplastics are polymer particles smaller than 5 millimeters, with nanoplastics, less than 100 μm, posing even greater concern due to their invisibility to the naked eye.

Sources of Microplastic Pollution

Microplastics contaminate rivers, seas, soils, air, and drinking water, and are a significant threat to the environment and food chain. Their resistance to (bio)degradation means they persist in the environment for long periods. Microplastics are classified into primary and secondary types:

  • Primary Microplastics: Released directly into the environment from cosmetic products, tire wear, and synthetic fiber release during the washing of clothes.
  • Secondary Microplastics: Result from the wear and tear of objects and structures or the fragmentation of plastic waste, accounting for up to 81% of ocean microplastics.

The Role of Producers in Combatting Microplastic Pollution

Producers have a crucial role in addressing microplastic pollution. They can:

  • Reduce plastic usage in products.
  • Adopt biodegradable alternatives.
  • Improve production processes to limit microplastic dispersion.
  • Develop products using recycled materials to reduce the introduction of new plastics into the environment.

Analytical's Advanced Microplastic Analysis

At Analytical, in collaboration with the University of Florence, we use advanced micro-FTIR instrumentation for qualitative and quantitative plastic analysis across various matrices. As a testing laboratory, we can identify and quantify microplastics in products, ecosystems, and organisms.

Techniques for Microplastic Detection

Using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), we offer detailed analyses that help understand the extent of microplastic contamination. These tests not only reveal the presence of microplastics but also identify their chemical composition, providing critical information for effective mitigation strategies.

Our Commitment

Through preventive actions by producers and advanced analytical techniques, we can address the challenge of microplastic pollution, protecting ecosystems and human health. Analytical is dedicated to supporting this mission with state-of-the-art testing and a commitment to sustainability.
