Insights > PFAS and TOF
Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) represent a vast group of compounds used to enhance the performance of numerous products, including textiles, non-stick cookware, cosmetics, and paints.
These fluorine-containing chemical compounds are highly stable due to the strong bonds between carbon and fluorine atoms. This stability provides unique chemical properties such as excellent water and stain resistance. However, the same chemical stability means PFAS are difficult to degrade and persist in ecosystems.
Monitoring PFAS
At Analytical, we offer a comprehensive range of services for monitoring PFAS, including testing materials and products and providing support throughout the supply chain.
PFAS were introduced into industrial and commercial use in the 1940s, but awareness of their harmful effects has only recently emerged, highlighting the need for stringent regulation of their production and use, ultimately aiming for their phased elimination in all applications.
International Regulations and PFAS Testing
International regulations have already adopted measures ranging from banning specific substances to reducing their presence in analyzed samples. Here are some matrices on which we test for PFAS:
- Consumer Products: Including, but not limited to, textiles, clothing, footwear, furniture, and accessories.
- Water: Both drinking water and wastewater.
- Environmental Samples: Including water, soil, and waste.
- Food Products.
Total Fluorine and Total Organic Fluorine
Given that PFAS include a set of over 10,000 chemical compounds, of which the most well-known are PFOS, PFOA, and their salts, identifying them through specific tests presents challenges. Regulations aim to limit the use of certain identified PFAS substances, but recently, there has been a need to verify the overall presence of PFAS through specific tests.
Consequently, analyses of Total Fluorine (TF) and Total Organic Fluorine (TOF) are increasingly required, especially for consumer products such as textiles, clothing, and footwear.
