In September 2024, ZDHC released Version 2.2 of the “Wastewater Guidelines,” an interim update ahead of the full revision 3.0, scheduled for September 2025. This version will come into effect starting in November 2024.
Our laboratory is authorized for the analysis and verification of the new parameters introduced, offering support to brands, tanneries, and textile operators to ensure compliance with the new guidelines.
Key updates
Gradual assimilation of parameter sets: Some parameters, previously applicable only to wastewater from textile industries, are now extended to include tanneries as well.
Revision of limits for water and sludge: Certain limits have been updated and modified for both water and sludge, including field parameters (i.e., those to be analyzed on-site).
New set of parameters for sludge: A type of sludge will be subject to a new set of parameters for raw material, in addition to the parameters required for leaching. This allows for a more comprehensive analysis of the material.
Why is it important to align?
The update of the guidelines aims to standardize water and sludge management practices globally, improving sustainability and minimizing the environmental impact of textile and tanning processes. Adopting the new ZDHC Wastewater Guidelines helps ensure compliance with chemical limits, promotes responsible wastewater management, and provides clear criteria for monitoring water treatment processes.
Other key details of the changes introduced in Version 2.2 of the Wastewater Guidelines
The introduced changes concern the testing tables for water and sludge, with updates to the limits for various parameters, such as metals, solvents, and additives, to ensure greater accuracy and compliance with environmental standards. Additionally, new requirements for reporting and communication of results have been introduced, directed at both suppliers and companies managing wastewater treatment. These requirements place particular emphasis on compliance with ZDHC MRSL standards, ensuring transparent and responsible management of the chemicals used.
