In 2026, ZDHC launched a major update to its Roadmap to Zero Programme, introducing changes to chemical management, supplier performance assessment, and environmental monitoring across the supply chain.
The updates cover four key areas: Gateway 2.0, introducing new data management features; Supplier to Zero V2, strengthening supplier performance assessment; MRSL V4.0, revising the list of restricted substances; and Wastewater & Sludge Guidelines V2, introducing new requirements for wastewater and sludge monitoring.
These developments reinforce the integration of data traceability, chemical management, and environmental performance monitoring.
ZDHC Gateway 2.0: What Changes for Suppliers?
Operational since 18 August 2026, the new ZDHC Gateway 2.0 has undergone further updates to address initial issues and introduce additional functionalities.
One of the main changes concerns ClearStream management: the initial sampling and testing request must now be initiated directly by the Supplier through the Gateway, following the Get ClearStream procedure, to enable subsequent data registration and the generation of the ClearStream report.
Suppliers are also required to complete their profiles, providing information on on-site treatment processes and sludge disposal methods, in collaboration with their Service Provider.
Supplier to Zero V2: Greater Focus on Performance
Published on 31 July 2026, the new version of Supplier to Zero introduces a more structured framework for assessing and improving sustainable chemical management practices.
The main change is the increased emphasis on actual performance, assessed by the Auditor across three performance levels through both remote (desktop) and on-site assessments.
The update covers the programme’s three core areas:
Input: traceability of incoming materials, chemical purchasing criteria, and supplier assessment.
Process: strategy and action planning, chemical storage, chemical waste management, and incident root cause analysis.
Output: wastewater treatment plant assessment, air emissions, greenhouse gas reduction targets, and chemical waste management.
The objective is to move beyond a purely document-based assessment, placing greater emphasis on the effective implementation of chemical management practices and continuous improvement.
ZDHC MRSL V4.0: Towards New Chemical Requirements
The ZDHC Manufacturing Restricted Substances List (MRSL) identifies chemicals subject to restrictions on intentional use in manufacturing processes.
In 2026, ZDHC initiated the revision process leading to MRSL V4.0, which is currently being finalised. Technical sessions are scheduled for November 2026, with specific attention also given to PFAS.
As the proposed technical changes are not yet final, it will be important to wait for the official publication before conducting a comprehensive assessment.
Once the final version becomes available, chemical formulators will need to compare the requirements of MRSL V3.1 and V4.0, conducting a gap analysis of their chemical formulation portfolios.
A dedicated profile for chemical formulators is also expected to be introduced within the ZDHC Formulators Roadmap to Zero, providing guidance on implementing the programme’s requirements.
Wastewater & Sludge Guidelines V2: New Requirements for Wastewater and Sludge
The new version of the ZDHC Wastewater & Sludge Guidelines, which will come into effect on 1 December 2026, introduces updates to monitoring parameters, testing methods, and results management. Until then, V1 remains applicable.
Key changes include new MRSL parameters, updated analytical methods, stricter wastewater limits, and an expanded range of substances to be tested in sludge, including PFAS, flame retardants, and phthalates.
V2 also introduces semi-announced sampling and provides further clarification on wastewater streams, discharge categories, compliance expectations, and the management of MRSL detections.
Updates to Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and Corrective Action Plan (CAP) procedures are also included, strengthening the link between environmental monitoring and non-conformity management.
Key Dates and Deadlines
The ZDHC updates involve several implementation and transition phases. Below are the key dates to consider when planning compliance activities.
Date | Update | What Changes |
31 July 2026 | Supplier to Zero V2 | Publication of the new version. |
1 August 2026 – 31 January 2027 | Supplier to Zero V2 | Transition period: V1 remains valid for assessments, while V2 is available to help suppliers prepare for the new requirements. |
18 August 2026 | Gateway 2.0 | Launch of the new ZDHC digital platform. |
November 2026 | MRSL V4.0 | Technical webinars covering the new version, which is still being finalised as of October 2026. |
1 December 2026 | Wastewater & Sludge Guidelines V2 | V2 comes into effect, replacing V1. |
1 February 2027 | Supplier to Zero V2 | V2 becomes mandatory for all new assessments; V1 is archived. |
