The Low Voltage Directive (LVD) 2014/35/EU mandates rigorous Electrical Safety Testing for introducing electrical or electronic devices into the market. This regulation applies to devices operating within specific voltage limits (75 to 1,500 Volts for direct current and 50 to 1,000 Volts for alternating current), ensuring they are safe for their intended use.
Valid throughout the European Union, the Directive aligns with IEC/ISO EN standards for the production and certification of devices, which must bear the CE Mark as proof of compliance. This system ensures that products approved in one member country are accepted in all other member states.
Electrical Safety Testing
The required tests vary depending on the product category, aiming to evaluate different aspects of electrical safety, such as insulation resistance, dielectric strength, and ground continuity. While procedures are largely uniform across various standards, each standard specifies levels of rigor to preserve the test’s effectiveness without damaging the device under examination.
