First introduced in the European Union with Directive 2002\/95\/EC, RoHS aims to reduce risks to human health and the environment by promoting sustainable production and the recycling of electronic waste.<\/p><p data-start=\"422\" data-end=\"890\">Since 2006, the EU has restricted six key substances (Pb, Hg, Cd, Cr\u2076\u207a, PBB, PBDE), later expanded by Directive 2011\/65\/EU (RoHS II) and Directive (EU) 2015\/863 (RoHS III), which included four phthalates (DEHP, BBP, DBP, DIBP). This approach has made RoHS a global regulatory model, adopted or adapted by numerous non-EU countries (China, South Korea, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, etc.), with local variations but a common goal: reducing hazardous substances in EEE.<\/p><h3 data-start=\"897\" data-end=\"970\">\u00a0<\/h3><h3 data-start=\"897\" data-end=\"970\"><strong data-start=\"901\" data-end=\"968\">China \u2013 Standard GB 26572-2025 (mandatory as of August 1, 2027)<\/strong><\/h3><p data-start=\"971\" data-end=\"1104\">China issued GB 26572-2025, the first mandatory national RoHS standard, on August 1, 2025, with entry into force on August 1, 2027.<\/p><p data-start=\"1106\" data-end=\"1125\">Key features:<\/p><ul data-start=\"1126\" data-end=\"1592\"><li data-start=\"1126\" data-end=\"1220\"><p data-start=\"1128\" data-end=\"1220\">Replaces standards GB\/T 26572-2011 (concentration limits) and SJ\/T 11364-2014 (labelling).<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"1221\" data-end=\"1321\"><p data-start=\"1223\" data-end=\"1321\">Expands the restricted substances from 6 to 10, adding the four phthalates in line with EU RoHS.<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"1322\" data-end=\"1399\"><p data-start=\"1324\" data-end=\"1399\">Introduces new labelling methods, including digital solutions (QR codes).<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"1400\" data-end=\"1592\"><p data-start=\"1402\" data-end=\"1592\">The integration of labelling rules into the main standard simplifies the regulatory framework, enhancing transparency and traceability for electronic products placed on the Chinese market.<\/p><\/li><\/ul><h3 data-start=\"1599\" data-end=\"1662\">\u00a0<\/h3><h3 data-start=\"1599\" data-end=\"1662\"><strong data-start=\"1603\" data-end=\"1660\">Saudi Arabia \u2013 Draft revision of SASO RoHS regulation<\/strong><\/h3><p data-start=\"1663\" data-end=\"1769\">The Saudi RoHS regulation, in force since 2021, currently restricts 6 substances following the EU model.<\/p><p data-start=\"1771\" data-end=\"1852\">On July 23, 2025, a draft recast was published introducing significant changes:<\/p><ul data-start=\"1853\" data-end=\"2202\"><li data-start=\"1853\" data-end=\"1931\"><p data-start=\"1855\" data-end=\"1931\">Alignment of the scope with Annex I of EU RoHS, excluding medical devices.<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"1932\" data-end=\"1989\"><p data-start=\"1934\" data-end=\"1989\">Inclusion of the 4 phthalates (DEHP, BBP, DBP, DIBP).<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"1990\" data-end=\"2099\"><p data-start=\"1992\" data-end=\"2099\">Clear definition of responsibilities for all economic operators (manufacturers, importers, distributors).<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"2100\" data-end=\"2202\"><p data-start=\"2102\" data-end=\"2202\">Additional requirements: documentation in Arabic, risk assessment, and stricter conformity checks.<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"2204\" data-end=\"2360\">This evolution highlights a growing trend toward international harmonization, while retaining local specificities tied to language and customs procedures.<\/p><h3 data-start=\"2367\" data-end=\"2407\">\u00a0<\/h3><h3 data-start=\"2367\" data-end=\"2407\"><strong data-start=\"2371\" data-end=\"2405\">Brazil \u2013 Draft RoHS regulation<\/strong><\/h3><p data-start=\"2408\" data-end=\"2561\">After years of discussion, Brazil has resumed the process of developing a national RoHS regulation. The new draft is strongly inspired by the EU model:<\/p><ul data-start=\"2562\" data-end=\"2940\"><li data-start=\"2562\" data-end=\"2629\"><p data-start=\"2564\" data-end=\"2629\">Restriction of the same 10 substances already banned in Europe.<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"2630\" data-end=\"2703\"><p data-start=\"2632\" data-end=\"2703\">Application with staggered deadlines depending on product categories.<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"2704\" data-end=\"2779\"><p data-start=\"2706\" data-end=\"2779\">Mandatory labelling in Portuguese and inclusion in a national registry.<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"2780\" data-end=\"2940\"><p data-start=\"2782\" data-end=\"2940\">System based on supplier self-declarations of conformity, supported by technical documentation (BoM, test reports, DoC) to be retained for at least 5 years.<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"2942\" data-end=\"3060\">Brazilian authorities will be granted strict enforcement powers, including fines, sales bans, and mandatory recalls.<\/p><h3 data-start=\"3067\" data-end=\"3107\">\u00a0<\/h3><h3 data-start=\"3067\" data-end=\"3107\"><strong data-start=\"3071\" data-end=\"3105\">Towards a global RoHS paradigm<\/strong><\/h3><p data-start=\"3108\" data-end=\"3514\">The review of recent regulatory developments in China, Saudi Arabia, and Brazil shows how RoHS has become a global regulatory paradigm for managing hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment.
